I have been without a true studio for about 4 mths now. I am still processing what it means not to have a dedicated site for making. How does the the rhizomic studio function? In the in between time, I am playing in the city. How does the city as site change the way I think and produce?

I am starting a new phase and it is one I am a little unsure of yet. For all intensive purposes, I will be studio-less. This was a really hard decision for me to let go of the trappings of "being an artist". But I have come to realize that I actually have a post studio practice. I use my computer more than a physical space, so I figured I would bite the bullet.

When I was in Greensboro, I had a wonderful space, but I barely used it. Granted I never felt comfortable there- too antiseptic and never felt welcomed into the space, but it was huge and great.

So the question becomes how will my practice evolve? All the projects I am currently working on deal with the web and a person interactivity, and that happened before I let go of the physical studio and embraced the post studio practice. So, it feels like the right decision for now.

Manifesto

I love paper, the touch, the delicacy of it. It has a memory unlike any other form. If you fold it, it will remember, if you spill something, it absorbs it. Any act upon its surface remains. It will not lie to you. It just is. And yet, paper is ephemeral. Too much sunlight it will turn on you, yellow an angry protest to its condition. Stored improperly, the edges will deteriorate at an astonishing rate. It is not permanent, does not pretend to be. To work on paper is to work on eventual nothingness.

I think my love of paper, it essence, the memory, the fragility and the eventual disintegration are also why I love net art pieces. They share the same soul.

When something is put on the web, a version always remains, the memory of it stays.It also absorbs, much like paper. Net art can absorb viruses, spills of code. The access to the work of net art, is fragile, it is dependant upon outside influences; power, web browser, site traffic. much like paper is dependant on its environment for survival. And the speed with which works rise and fall in popularity on the web, creates a eventual meaninglessness, a nothingness made up of ones and zeros.

The ones and zeros, alternating binary forms remind me of the alternating cross patterns of paper fiber. Still, there is nothing like holding something in your hand, especially when that thing is paper. I love the ephemeral nature of paper, although I hold it, I know eventually one day it will be dust. And for net art, although I access it, I don't really believe that a hundred years from now it will still be there. Perhaps my skepticism comes from my generation. We grew up as computers were beginning, but we remember a time before a time when the tactile world ruled.

1000 are done...

I have the 1000 drawings done. Now I am searching for a space that will I can install them all at once. Not an easy task. 100 drawings take approximately 3' x 4 ' , so I am guessing I will need a wall at least 30' x 40 '. Also looking for the best way to put them up on the wall so they can be easily installed and uninstalled. that has proven way harder than I would like.
It feels weird not to be drawing these anymore. I really like the idea of massing. This summer I am going to do 100 animations. Short quick animations, but I may need a new computer for that.

I have been thinking a lot lately about the way I make, about the underlying structure to how I make everything.

The research, the looking the pondering and thinking.

Then incessant need to construct a system, which forms the aesthetic.

And takes form and shape in the work.

Becoming what it is.

Each project I create follows this method. There is a wonderful abandon to the joy I feel in completing the system. If I create a system, and follow it precisely, the system becomes the silent guide, always present, but never really focused on in the final work. But honestly, I think I just love the comfort of knowing something makes sense.

I set out this summer to make 1000 drawings. So far I have 500 done. I never realized how hard this little side project was going to be. But I really have enjoyed it thus far and will continue with it, though my deadline of "before classes" start is not going to happen. The game plan for this work now is to find a space, once all 1000 are done to exhibit them all at once. There is another aspect to it, which hopefully I will get to fulfill.

airports. panels. lobbies. I enjoy drawing people without them knowing, secretly trying to capture the briefest of essence of a person through a line. It is a gesture drawn in a single moment, looking at the person intently. Sometimes they catch me, and ask what I am doing, I show them. Sometimes they laugh. It looks nothing like them. And yet, there is something there that is them at that instance, and something of me too.

Last night I made 18 of these little drawings. They come from objects around my house, but they destroy any sense of thingness. They are my thinking process. And now I have finally figured out what their final iteration is going to be, which is really exciting.

I have been trying to get a three channel video for drawing and undrawing the self up and running. Stupid technology, and lack of patience. These are the three base drawings if you will. But the piece will need to incorporate at least, I think 10 for each screen. Playing, talking to each other.
